I was always comparing prices on everything. When I contracted my auto insurance, I chose the most economical option I found: it met the legal requirements and seemed sufficient. A crash on a busy avenue taught me I was completely wrong. This is the story of how a monthly 'savings' ended up costing me much more than I ever imagined.
1. The accident that changed my perspective
It was a normal Tuesday, coming back from work. At a traffic light intersection, the car ahead braked abruptly for a pedestrian who crossed on red. I couldn't brake in time and hit it from behind. Fortunately no one was injured, but the car I hit was a high-end imported model and the damages were significant. The damages to its rear bumper, sensors and LED lights amounted to a lot of money according to the official estimate. My mandatory Civil Liability insurance covered these damages without problem, since the law establishes sufficient amounts for this type of claims. The problem was my car. It suffered moderate front damages: bumper, optics, radiator and hood. The repair cost me a considerable amount, which I paid completely out of pocket because I only had mandatory Civil Liability, without any additional coverage for my own vehicle. Total disbursed: a considerable amount.
2. Why I chose the cheapest policy
Six months earlier I had contracted the most economical option available online: only mandatory Civil Liability for too cheap monthly. Other more complete coverages (third party complete, comprehensive) cost much more expensive. The difference seemed enormous. I read that Civil Liability was mandatory by law and thought: 'I'm a good driver, I haven't crashed in 8 years, why would I pay double or triple for coverages I'll probably never use?' I chose the cheapest option and that's it. I never stopped to think what would happen if the damages were to MY car, or if it was stolen, or if it caught fire. I simply assumed 'legal was enough'. I saved a considerable sum during 6 months: a considerable sum in total. I lost a lot of money in an accident.
3. The reality of current costs
What I hadn't realized is that repair costs for modern cars are extremely high. Today vehicles concentrate value in electronics and optics, which skyrockets estimates: * Bumpers with sensors: high prices (depending on whether alternative or original) * LED headlights: high costs (aftermarket vs. original imports) * Paint per panel at official workshop: high prices * Electronic module reprogramming: additional costs In my case, the damages to my Volkswagen Virtus (valued at a considerable value) added up to a significant amount. If I had hit something more serious, or if my car had been stolen, I would have lost everything.
4. The financial cost nobody mentions
I had to take out a personal loan to cover the expenses. In Argentina, personal loan rates average high rates, and some commercial offers exceed 100-120% according to bank and term. This means the real cost of the accident multiplies due to the financial burden.
5. What nobody explained to me when contracting
After the accident, a friend who works in insurance explained things I wish I had known before: About Civil Liability: It covers ONLY damages you cause to third parties (other cars, people, things) It NEVER covers damages to your own vehicle It is mandatory by law, but it's the bare minimum About additional coverages: Third Party Complete: Includes Civil Liability + total and partial theft + total and partial fire + total accident damages to your car (most contracted) Third Party Complete with Hail: Covers all of the above + hail damages, increasingly common Comprehensive with Deductible: Covers all of the above + partial damages from any claim to your car, you pay a percentage Comprehensive without Deductible: Covers all of the above + partial damages, without paying anything out of pocket Other coverages I didn't know existed: Glass breakage Locks and keys Roadside mechanical assistance Claims management with legal advice All that information was available, but I didn't even know what to ask. I contracted online, without talking to anyone. Nobody guided me on what was appropriate for my profile.
6. How I changed my way of contracting insurance
When my policy renewed, I did things differently. I looked for a licensed insurance advisor producer who explained options in clear language. He showed me statistics: in urban areas like Buenos Aires, traffic accidents are frequent, and car thefts are on the rise. He asked about my routine: How many kilometers do I drive per day? (45 km in AMBA) Where do I park? (Street, without garage) Do I circulate through high-traffic areas? (Gral. Paz Ave, Panamericana) What is the value of my car? (a considerable value) With that information, he put together complete coverage: Comprehensive with Deductible: Covers any damage to my car (accidents, theft, fire), with a fixed deductible of a reasonable amount Expanded Civil Liability Roadside assistance throughout the country Claims management with legal advice included Cost: a higher price monthly The difference with my previous policy was a significant difference per month. If I had had this coverage during those 6 months, I would have paid a considerable investment additionally, but in the accident I would have only paid the deductible of a fixed amount instead of a lot of money. Net savings even considering the installments: a considerable difference Additionally, now I know exactly what I have contracted and, more importantly, why I have it. That knowledge and peace of mind are priceless.
Conclusion
My experience taught me that in insurance, cheap can be very expensive. It's not just about having 'insurance', but having the right insurance for your reality: use, area, car value and risk tolerance. Today I pay more monthly, but I sleep peacefully knowing that if something happens, I'm truly protected. And most importantly: I have someone who understands this and can guide me, because clearly I had no idea what I was buying. The lesson: Saving monthly cost me a lot of money in one day.
